Bees in a Box - 150 Years of Indoctrination

"Indoctrination: the process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically." I follow a number of beekeeping facebook groups.  The combined membership of these groups easily exceeds 100,000 people.  Of course, who knows how many duplicates there are from group to group.  I'm certainly a duplicate in all of the groups that I follow. However, I am amazed and appalled at how often beekeepers, particularly in the U.S., write posts from the perspective of "keeping bees in a box," as if that existence, for the bees, was the extent of their design and their history,...

Why an Eco-Floor?

Why an Eco-Floor?

The bottom component of a Bee Tree Hive is the combination Eco-Floor and Stand.  A honey bee colony is not designed to live as a solitary organism in a sterile environment.  In the wild, they live in symbiotic relationship with thousands of other organisms - from yeasts, molds, and fungi, to many other insects... including several varieties of mites! The Eco-Floor is open on the top and screened on the bottom.  This allows you to fill it with detritus from the ground in the region where the hive will be located.  This adds indigenous organisms to the hive environment, which brings...

Why an Insulated, Ventilated Hive Cover/Feeder?

Why an Insulated, Ventilated Hive Cover/Feeder?

Even a standard Langstroth hive can be greatly improved by adding the Insulated, Ventilated Hive Cover/Feeder.  (This will take the place of an inner cover, any kind of top feeder, and an outer cover.) The Hive Cover incorporates a ventilated, insulated cover with an inside-the-hive feeder.  This component, in conjunction with the double-thick cedar Hive Bodies and the Eco-Floor, fully insulates the hive throughout the year, while giving the bees complete control over both the amount and route of ventilation that flows through the hive. Here's what this accomplishes: The bees have complete control over the amount and route of the ventilation. ...

The Research Behind Bee Tree Hives

Below is a very brief account of my journey so far.  I study honey bees, not beekeeping, and I am always eager to learn more of what they have to teach me.  I love this quote by Sue Hubbell in A Book of Bees: “The only time I ever believed that I knew all there was to know about beekeeping was the first year I was keeping them.  Every year since I’ve known less and less…” In March of 2017, the American Bee Journal published an article by Dr. Thomas Seeley titled Darwinian Beekeeping.  Dr. Seeley is the Horace White Professor in...

Feedback and Reviews

"Thanks for your excellent message.  It's so great to see folks who are thinking the same way appearing online.  I think you'll knock it out of the park. There are so many people who are capable and willing to think independently of the corporate messaging of the industrial beekeeping power. More and more people are sensing it's all wrong for bees.  Seeing new working ideas like yours gives us all a voice." [Regarding the shipping costs:] "...the quality is well worth it. Those pieces are beautiful!" "I called the store where I get my supplies and told her I had purchased...
